Spring 2004

The 5th meeting of ISO TC 207 WG 5 (greenhouse gases) took place in London, UK. Ecologia's Board Member and policy advisor Aleg Cherp was selected as a co-facilitator of the sub-group preparing the organizational part of the greenhouse gas accounting standard. ECOLOGIA was also asked to present its vision on the adherence of WG 5 to its four self-declared process principles. Winter 2004

ECOLOGIA to Share Standards Experience
On December 7-8, ECOLOGIA Program Director Heather McGray presented a paper titled "Perspectives from an Environmental Advocate on Standards and Public Interest Representation" at a roundtable conference convened by the Markle Foundation, the Stanhope Centre, Ford Foundation and the Open Society Institute. The roundtable, titled "The Vocabulary of Standards", aimed to identify ways of improving representation of NGOs and developing countries in the development of international standards on information and communications technology.

Autumn 2003

Panel Event on Greenhouse Gas Accounting
In partnership with NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), ECOLOGIA hosted a panel discussion on greenhouse gas accounting as a side-event to the UN climate convention's Ninth Council of Parties in Milano, Italy, in December 2003. The discussion involved representatives of ISO TC207 Working Group 5 on Climate Change, the WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and a range of stakeholders with an interest in greenhouse gas accounting.

As part of ECOLOGIA's on-going involvement in creating an international standard for measuring greenhouse gas emissions, Program Director Heather McGray attended a meeting of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Vienna, Austria, October 27 - 29, 2003. The purpose of this meeting was to work on 'project level quantification'.

Summer 2003

Spring 2003

Wallace Global Fund Supports ECOLOGIA Climate Change Work
At the end of March 2003, the Wallace Global Fund awarded a grant to support ECOLOGIA's participation in the development of ISO standards on greenhouse gas measurement, reporting and verification.

Aleg Cherp, ECOLOGIA Board Member and Professor of the Central European University, made a presentation at the CATEP conference “International Standardization of GHG Accounting". View the presentation (.pdf).

Autumn 2002

ECOLOGIA joins the international greenhouse gas reduction effort.
ECOLOGIA co-chairs a committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that will facilitate the development of the greenhouse gas standard by coordinating definitions of technical terms, liaising with climate change experts, and generally smoothing the way for collaboration among the many companies, organizations and national governments that are involved in the ISO climate change initiative. Summer 2002

In June 2002, ECOLOGIA representatives participated in the annual plenary of ISO Technical Committee 207, the international committee developing the ISO 14000 standards for environmental management. They took part in a new working group that will develop international standards for the measurement, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions. ECOLOGIA was named a co-ordinator of an ad hoc subgroup on "cross-cutting issues" related to greenhouse gas emissions, including stakeholder involvement in the standards development process.
