ECOLOGIA Succeeds at TC 207 Meeting

In June, ECOLOGIA Board Member Aleg Cherp and Project Director Heather McGray traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa as delegates to the annual plenary of ISO Technical Committee 207, the international committee developing the ISO 14000 standards for environmental management. They took part in a new working group that will develop international standards for the measurement, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions. ECOLOGIA was named a co-ordinator of an ad hoc subgroup on "cross-cutting issues" related to greenhouse gas emissions, including stakeholder involvement in the standards development process. Attaining such a leadership position is no small feat for an NGO in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)!

In addition, ECOLOGIA's representatives worked with NGO, industry and government colleagues to create "A Guide for NGO Participation in ISO/TC 207" (in .pdf-format), which provides background information and step-by-step advice for NGOs that wish to take part in TC 207's decision-making. This guide won praise from diverse delegates in Johannesburg and is useful for NGOs and non-NGOs new to TC 207's work.

We will soon be updating ECOLOGIA's Environmental Management Systems webpage and the ISO 14000 NGO Initiative website with more information on our work.
